Our Experts

Ben Ross

Deputy Head of Travel, The Telegraph

Biography

Ben Ross is the Deputy Head of Travel at the Telegraph Media Group. He began writing about travel in 2001, becoming Travel Editor of The Independent newspaper in 2007 and Head of Travel for the Independent and the Independent on Sunday in 2011. He joined The Telegraph in 2014 and is responsible for editorial content across both of the Telegraph’s weekend travel sections.

Lyn Hughes

Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Wanderlust

Biography

In 1992 Lyn and her late husband, Paul Morrison, were bored on a flight to South America and so schemed out their ideal travel magazine on the back of a sickbag. The idea stuck and, on their return to the UK, they launched Wanderlust magazine from their spare bedroom at a time when there were no other consumer travel magazines. The print magazine has been joined by a range of digital channels, events and services. Brand extensions include the Wanderlust World Guide Awards and Wanderlust Photo of the Year. The magazine itself continues to thrive and has won numerous awards, most recently Travel Magazine of the Year at the inaugural TravMedia awards, at which Lyn was also presented with an Outstanding Contribution award.

While Wanderlust is now part of the Think Publishing group, Lyn is still very much hands-on and at the helm as editor-in-chief. She is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, vice-chair of LATA, and sits on the Media Advisory Group of the Adventure Travel Trade Association. Lyn is regularly consulted on travel-related issues, especially regarding sustainable tourism, and strongly believes in tourism as a force for good, benefiting local communities, wildlife and the natural world.

Sophie Lam

Travel Editor at i

Biography

Sophie Lam is Travel Editor at i. She started her career in travel at The Independent in 2004 and began working for i when it launched as a sister title to The Independent in 2010. She was appointed Head of Travel across ESI Media (The Independent, The Independent on Sunday, i and London Evening Standard), in 2014 and launched The Independent Travel Awards during her tenure.

After having her first child, she left ESI to re-join i under its new owners Johnston Press in 2017. After her second child, she returned to her role to launch i’s inaugural Staycation Awards in 2019. As the title’s sole travel representative Sophie writes, commissions and edits travel news, destination features, reviews, interviews and commercial projects and works across print and digital.
Now a 10-year-old newspaper and four-year old website, i was this year named the most trusted national news brand by industry auditor PAMCo and was named British Media Brand of the Year at the 2019 British Media Awards. It was bought by DMGT at the end of last year.
